Cold Plunge and Winter Swimming – Cold Exposure All Year Round
Cold Exposure All Year Round
There is something about winter swimming that a cold plunge cannot – and does not need to – fully replicate.
The crisp air, sauna, natural water and that first step into icy water create an experience of their own. As someone who enjoys winter swimming, I am happy to head to an ice hole whenever the opportunity is there.
But in Finland, the seasons change. The ice melts in spring, lakes warm up in summer and sometimes the nearest winter swimming spot simply does not fit into everyday life.
That is where a cold plunge does not replace winter swimming. Instead, it extends the possibility of cold exposure into the times of year when nature no longer provides the right conditions.
So perhaps the question should not be cold plunge or winter swimming?
A better question is: how can cold exposure become part of your routine all year round?
Winter swimming is about more than cold water
For many people, winter swimming is about much more than water temperature.
It can be connected to being outdoors, sauna, the changing seasons and even a sense of community. Heading to the water on a winter day can be a small escape from everyday life in itself.
That is why comparing winter swimming and a cold plunge purely by temperature misses part of the point.
Open water offers a natural experience that is slightly different every time. Weather, water temperature, wind and surroundings all change from one session to the next.
A cold plunge offers a different kind of advantage: control and easy accessibility.
There is room for both.

When winter ends, cold exposure does not have to
During winter, natural water provides almost ideal conditions for cold exposure.
Summer is different.
As lakes and the sea warm up, the water may no longer provide the same cold experience. Adding bags of ice to a regular tub is possible, but for frequent use it quickly becomes inconvenient.
A temperature-controlled cold plunge allows you to maintain the same routine regardless of the season.
With ICY, the water temperature can be adjusted to suit your preference. Cold exposure can therefore remain part of your routine in January, May or during the hottest days of July.
Winter can belong to open water. In summer, a cold plunge naturally takes over.
Controlled temperature makes the experience repeatable
One of the biggest differences between winter swimming and a cold plunge is temperature control.
In open water, nature decides the temperature. That unpredictability is also part of its appeal.
With a temperature-controlled cold plunge, you can find the temperature that suits you and return to the same setting from one session to the next.
Someone new to cold exposure can begin with slightly warmer water and lower the temperature gradually. A more experienced user may prefer a more intense experience.
The goal does not need to be the coldest possible water. What matters more is finding a level that feels controlled and that you are willing to return to consistently.

Winter swimming when you can – cold plunging when you want
In everyday life, the biggest difference may simply come down to accessibility. If you have a good winter swimming spot nearby, a trip to the ice hole can easily become one of the highlights of the week.
But there is not always time to go. And not everyone has safe, easily accessible open water close to home.
Having a cold plunge at home removes many of those practical barriers. The water is ready when it suits you – before work, after training or together with a sauna session.
There is no need to drive anywhere. No need to wait for the right season. And no need to prepare an ice bath every time. That makes cold exposure easier to turn into a routine rather than an occasional event.

A cold plunge and sauna work in summer too
Sauna and winter swimming are a Finnish classic, but alternating between heat and cold does not have to belong only to winter.
The sauna heats up just as well in July as it does in January. Natural water, however, may no longer provide the same cold contrast.
A cold plunge brings that possibility back.
After sauna, you can step into controlled cold water and return to the heat if you wish. ICY can also be used with both cold and warm water, making it a versatile part of a home or professional wellness environment.

What about water cleanliness?
In open water, maintaining the water is naturally not the swimmer’s responsibility. With a cold plunge, it is different: the water and the equipment need regular care.
A well-designed system, however, should not mean constantly emptying and refilling the water. ICY’s integrated filtration system helps keep the water clean and makes regular use easier.
Routine maintenance is still important.

Cold plunge or winter swimming?
If you were expecting one clear winner, there is not one.
Winter swimming may be right for you if:
- you enjoy natural water and being outdoors
- a safe winter swimming location is easy to reach
- sauna and winter swimming are part of your seasonal routine
- you value the connection to nature and the changing seasons
A cold plunge may be right for you if:
- you want cold exposure to be available throughout the year
- you want to control the water temperature yourself
- you value having cold water available at home
- you want to make cold exposure a consistent part of everyday life
- you want the option of both cold and warm use
And many of us choose both.
Not either-or – but all year round
There is no need to replace what makes winter swimming unique.
If an ice hole is part of your lifestyle and easily accessible during winter, go and enjoy it. The experience includes much more than cold water: nature, the season and Nordic sauna culture all play a part.
A cold plunge solves a different problem.
It makes cold exposure independent of the season, the temperature of the nearest lake and the distance to the closest winter swimming spot.
Cold exposure throughout the year
ICY is a temperature-controlled cold plunge designed in Finland for indoor and outdoor use. Adjust the water temperature to suit your routine and enjoy cold exposure when it works for you – regardless of the season.
Winter swimming in winter. ICY in summer. And cold exposure can remain part of your routine throughout the year.
