How cold should a cold plunge be?

For many healthy adults, water between 10°C and 15°C (50°F–59°F) offers a strong but manageable cold experience. It is cold enough to create a clear response without making extreme temperatures the goal.
Colder is not always better
A cold plunge should feel challenging, but it should still be controlled. The purpose is not to tolerate the lowest possible temperature or stay in the water for as long as possible.

Start at approximately 14°C–15°C. Enter calmly, keep your head above the water and focus on steady breathing. A first session can be as short as 30–60 seconds.
Once the initial cold response feels more manageable, increase the duration gradually before lowering the temperature.
Comfortable with regular cold exposure
Many regular users choose temperatures around 10°C–13°C. At this level, the water feels clearly cold, but the experience can still remain controlled and repeatable.
There is rarely a reason to lower both the temperature and increase the duration at the same time. Change one variable, observe how you feel and allow your body time to adapt.
Below 10°C
Water below 10°C creates a significantly more intense experience. It is not necessary for most everyday cold-plunge routines.
